Spiritual Books - Sometimes, we forget that
patients are more than their bodies. The following are some of the best philosophical and
spiritual books about mind, body and soul I have read:
Ken Wilber:
Spectrum of Consciousness
Whether or not one agrees with his ideas, the book represents a truly
different view of mind and consciousness. Ken Wilber was a
Biochemistry major when he wrote this book and received instant fame.
Deepak Chopra:
How to know God
A fresh look at a difficult subject. A map of Spirit and a map of your
own deepest Self. Dr. Chopra was elected by Time Magazine as
one of the top 100 icons of the Century.
Yogananda: The
Science of Religion
The author was a great Yogi who lived and taught in the West for over
30 years. The example of his life and work have not only turned many
people god-ward, but has also shown them the way to self-realization.
Lao Tzu: Tao Te
Ching
One of the Chinese classics most widely known by Westerners, the Tao
Te Ching is a series of insightful comments on life and nature - part
poetry, part paradox, always forceful and profound.
Way of Chuang
Tsu (by Thomas Merton)
This is beautiful - insights more than teachings, startlingly
transparent nuggets of wisdom in short episodes with colorful
characters in a beautiful translation. Superb poetry and philosophy!
The Essential
Rumi
If you haven't discovered this 13th century mystical persian poet, you
are in for a treat!
I Ching
Workbook
The ancient chinese oracle, often amazingly accurate. Even if you
don't believe in oracles, the I Ching contains a treasure of
psychological insights. It's more than a book: a living interactive
experience.
How to think
like Leonardo da Vinci
Gelb sets out seven Da Vincinian Principles and illustrates each with
examples from da Vinci's life and work. He encourages the reader to
assess oneself with regard to each of the principles and then presents
an abundance of exercises to develop one's awareness of the principle
and skill at using it.
Julia Cameron:
The Artist's Way
If you are in doubt and you need just that little bit of encouragement,
if you know deep down inside that there is an artist in you, that
feels neglected or that you haven't yet discovered, take the plunge
and start a wonderful journey!
Pema Chödrön:
When Things Fall Apart
How can we go on living "when things fall apart" - when we
are overcome by pain, fear, and anxiety? Pema Chödrön's answer to
that question contains some spectacularly good news...
Lou Marinoff:
Plato, Not Prozac!
There was a time when philosophy meant something to ordinary people
and philosophers' ideas were put to good use. A unique movement called
Philosophical Counseling has emerged to return philosophy to its
classical roots by combining wisdom and practice to help people solve
their most common problems...
