That's exactly how i see the situation of most unemployed rn's in our country. sometimes i get to think that these institutions are just taking advantage of us professionals when they only offer volunteer work (which means indefinite free service to the institution for as long as one can survive and no guarantee to permanent employment). well, what's the point calling us professional when we're demean to equally stand as their employee. don't you think it's just one of their cost cutting strategy. pardon if i'm offending someone here. i'm only speaking of the reality of nursing profession here in philippines. i know some may say, no one pushes our nurses to do volunteer work. but who wont be compelled if it's the only "vacancy" (if i may say. well, they have no vacancy but they have sooo many rooms for volunteers. now, what is that?) an institution offers (you can just name them). I have nothing againts volunteer work. it's everyones prerogative i guess. what i disagree is that, it seems to becoming a trend this days. what protection do we have if we're not covered by a system. well of course yes, we get trained, our skills are enhanced and equally function as one of their staff nurse with all the load. We're human and professional. We seek work to survive and provide the basic needs of our family. Are we justified and being treated as professionals when hospitals can only offer us volunteer work? to me it's an insult. We deserve proper training, secure working condition and equally reasonable compensation. I hope PNA is also looking into it.... the welfare of our many unemployed nurses and to regulate those abusive institutions. I don't know if this is the proper forum to vent out my disappointments. I hope somebody higher in our nursing profession listens and will address to the problem.
